Review: Super Dinosaur #9

images-10
Robert Kirkman and Jason Howard have created one of the most fun all ages comics out right now. I mean what is not to love about this book? It has a T-Rex with mech arms and missiles, dinosaur men, a kid, Derek, who we all wish we could have been, smart, capable and most importantly, friends with a talking dinosaur.

This issues, like the ones that came before it, is a blast.

Derek and Super Dinosaur team up with an enemy, Squidious(a giant squid creature who can use coral and lava to make arms and legs), to try and defeat the mysterious villain who has been hounding them for the past few issues. My favorite part about this fight, is the fact that Derek is remotely controlling a robot double to take a test for him. It shows how smart he is and what he is capable of, even under fire. Subplots also move forward at a decent clip in this issue. Derek's father makes a hard decision that will have repercussions for issues to come.

This series keeps getting better and better. There is great action every issue but there is also great story moments where the characters shine. Jason Howard was good on Kirkman's other book, the Astounding Wolf-man. But with Super Dinosaur he has become great. He makes these action scenes sing with destruction. But is also able to play up the quieter moments with some great facial expressions and character acting.

If you are at all interested in fun action adventure comics that you can enjoy if you are eight or eighty. Check out Super Dinosaur. It is one of the most fun all ages books out there. And unlike some other books, it doesn't talk down to the readers.
