Review: Fanboys Vs Zombies #3

images-9
OH my stars and garters yes this is one of the funnest (yes I know technically that isn’t a word, but it fits) books on the market right now.  I mean what would happen to you at San Diego Comic Con if a zombie apocalypse started?  Would you survive (this isn’t the chiller network though that looks like fun), get eaten quickly or sacrifice yourself so others might live?

I would say you’d never know but real life seems to be mimicking art these days with “zombie” attacks in Florida and Maryland so who knows

Review: Superbia #4

images-8
So here we come to the end of the mini-series or the first act if you will.  This issue was perfect in that it solved some issues, created more and continually evolved the characters and their situations.  This book was intended to be about those, spouses, girlfriends, boyfriends and children of super-heroes and while they take center stage.  Grace has managed to make this “Housewives of the Super-Heroes” every bit as charming, gossipy, dramatic and downright addictive as any of the shows it seems to be modeled after.  Russell’s art just makes the book that much more perfect too.

Review: Exile on the Planet of the Apes #3

images-12

18 years before a man named Taylor fell from the stars…
Ape society is evolving, yet not all primates are considered equal. Humans alone lack the power of speech. Two years ago, Dr. Zaius banished all humans from Ape City, launching a campaign of eradication. But one among them was taught to communicate with his hands.
Now the human rebellion has begun. They don’t need to speak to find their voice…

Review: Irredeemable #37

images-21
I was actually a little taken aback when I heard that issue 37 was the final issue of Mark Waid's excellent superhero comic with a twist. I felt there was still a lot more story that needed telling, and I wasn't sure how Waid was going to tie it all up in one issue. Oh, me of little faith. I should know by now that one should always trust Mr. Waid. This issue ends the story perfectly. Character arcs are completed, Loose ends tied up and the final couple of pages will no doubt give readers a pay off we never expected, but makes complete sense. This series has been unique and exciting from beginning to end, and one of the finest examples of superhero comics on the market.

Review: Hellraiser #14

images-18
After decades of serving as Hell’s priestly servant, Pinhead grew weary. Bored by the tortures of the puzzle box, the iconic killer hatched a plan to claw his way free from Hell. To leave, Pinhead had to find a suitable replacement, and offered his power to the only human to ever defeat the Cenobites: Kirsty Cotton. Kirsty accepted Pinhead’s offer, hoping to save her family and friends, but becoming an unwitting accomplice in a plan to remake the world. Now, the former Pinhead, Captain Elliott Spencer, builds a nation-state of the damned in India, while Kirsty reels following the loss of a loved one…

Review: Steed and Mrs Peel #5

images-12
I find it rather strange how Grant Morisson left with 2 issues remaining in the book. But nonetheless, this comic has pretty much kept the tone set by the previous arc.

You wouldn't really notice the personnel change as it still has the trademark weirdness that defined the last story. Art wise, still incredible. Like I said before, Ian Gibson should go places after this book is done.

Review: Wordgirl: Fashion Disaster

images-10
Word Girl is a comic based off of a popular PBS Series. I would say the comic is a pretty good representation of the show. The series tells the tale of a little girl who becomes a superhero and uses words to solve crimes. The content is completely appropriate for the demographic and I believe a lot of fun could be had for children and their parents looking to share the comic medium.

In today’s industry it is easy to forget about making comics available to a younger audience.

Review: Valen the Outcast #6

images-3
This was my first issue of Valen the Outcast and I have to say I’m somewhat intrigued by it.  I know the premise, Valen was killed but now is something of a zombie and has a different path to follow now, since he was once a former King.  I love zombie stuff but this isn’t your typical story.  Valen has his memory, skills and apparently no love for eating flesh though he is undead.  Okay I can deal with that, more so since this seems to be taking place in a Conan type setting.  Swords and kingdoms with raiders and places that aren’t safe to wander at night.

Review: Planet of the Apes #13

images-6
With last months cliffhanger and it's jump a few years into the future, I was eagerly awaiting this issue. While it is a bit of a slow start, it has all the right hooks to bring me back for the next issue. With the opening scene of Sully's child, who has been raised by apes, kidnapped by some unknown human group., we get some great action done by Carlos Magno. The rest of the issue slows itself down and we see more of Voice Ayla, dealing with ape politics and discovering that the human she has been raising like a son has been kidnapped. There is also Sully trying to do all she can for her human resistance by attempting to get weapons from a foreign power.

Review: Adventure Time #1

images-2
This is a comic I’ve been excited for, there are many things I love about ‘Adventure Time’ with Fin and Jake. I thought it would work perfectly for the comic medium. In this issue, as in the show, we are given two stories. One is centered on Fin and Jake while the other story, aptly titled ‘My Cider Mountain’ follows the adventure of another character, Tree Trunks. The first opens with the “mysterious” snail that appears in every episode of Adventure Time. When I saw this I knew it was going to be true to form and in fact the snail is the catalyst to the first main story.

Review: Ice Age: Iced In

iceage
Ice Age is a fun all ages book. The story is simple: the three main characters of the movie, Sid, Manny and Diego, get caught in an avalanche and are trapped in a cave. The book has all the humour of the movies and captures the tone pretty well. None of the characters felt off in any way. And even Scratt, the sabre toothed squirrel is present in the book.

Review: Irredeemable #34

images-11
After treating us with the origin stories of Max Damage and the Plutonian, Mark Waid dives right back into the action of Irredeemable. The Plutonian was saved, at the last minute, by Qubit and Damage from being cast into a prison at the end of time by his parents. Much like The Plutonian himself, Irredeemable is the natural evolution of the superhero comic – a powerful, engaging story about a man with serious issues and world that has to deal with them.

Review: Valen the Outcast #3

images-3
Michael Alan Nelson and Matteo Scalera’s dark fantasy continues to be gritty, exciting action. One of the best writers of full-tilt, high octane action comics in the business, Michael Alan Nelson manages to make formulaic fantasy fresh and fun.

Issue begins with a possessed Zjanna attempting to kill Valen and Cordovan, who promptly flee into a forest. There they discover the violent signs that they may be in more danger in the forest than they were from Zjanna. As with the past few issues, the pacing is excellent.

Review: Key of Z #4

images-7
Zombies seem to have infested comic books in a shambling horde of brainless mediocrity, but some Zombie comics stand out from the undead crowd. Kirkman’s the Walking Dead is a prime example, and so is Key of Z. this final issue in the series by ‘Kill Audio’ creators Claudio Sanchez and Chondra Echert, with Aaron Kuder, provides a fantastic climax that left me wanting whole lot more.

Issue 4 begins with our main protagonist, Ewing, being sprung from jail by his partner in zombie slayage, Eddie.
