Rick and his away team finally return to home base. The events are in motion that I’m sure will once again change the game entirely for The Walking Dead. For me the entire community just seems a little to sure and secure with their place and the decisions they’re making, it all seems just a little too naive and Rick Grimes happens to be the worst. The issue opens with the survivors at Rick’s camp, and gives a little perspective on the happenings since Rick and his crew took off with Jesus. Soon Rick returns and sets motion on their plan to start what seems a lot like war.
In this issue of the Walking Dead we find Rick and his crew finally making it to Jesus’ community. Strange enough things don’t go as planned but maybe not in the way you would expect. Kirkman and his team do a lovely job setting up this issue it has hope, shock and awe with a zombie twist. The way this issue is set up is very similar to the walking dead in itself it sets the reader up with a momentary sense of security and then rips
This is the second issue after Rick and his crew met Jesus and primarily is a showcase of their reaction and follow through with the information they’ve received in the past issue. Rick, ever suspicious, decides on an offensive tactic and opts to take a few good men and Jesus and find out where he came from.
The story is very well written and you’ll get what you expect from a Walking Dead comic.
Having seen Rick Grimes tailor and doctor a bad situation into something monstrous yet necessary for his camp's survival was intriguing in the last episode. Furthermore, it compounded the fading hope of Hershel and Glen, as the tide turned and emotions ran on edge, with a moral compass turning south for Grimes, and as this issue shows, it's turning south for more of the endearing camp. They just may not be as caring anymore as a lot of people are doing what they can to survive, turning into their worst fears or greatest enemy with their primordial yet basic, natural instinct - kill the zombies or kill the humans...even their own...if it means they'll stay alive.
Things look to be changing once again for the Walking Dead. When I read this issue I had lost a little of the sense that everything was about to come crashing down once again, on Rick and his crew. The only time I would say I felt even a little insecure with their situation was the first page, when Rick seems to be trusting, Paul, the newcomer. You soon learn that as apprehensive as Rick and some of his crew may be they are prepared for whatever may happen next.
The past year on the Walking Dead has been, with the exception of half of Carl’s face being blown off, pretty stagnant. It’s all been about getting the community zombie-proof, and dealing with issues inside the fence. Issue 92 of Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard’s long running Image book heralds a change that will shake things up in a big way. Issue 91 left us with a final page implying someone is spying on the community. This issue we find out who it is, and they reveal something I thought would happen eventually, but was still pretty mind blowing. The community are becoming more and more desperate for food and supplies, and Carl is starting to remember things from before he was shot. Things Rick would much rather have stay forgotten.
After the perilous siege that lay waste to the travellers in Chicago, Rick Grimes and his posse, headed to Fort Benning, only for highway I-85 to change their paths and worries thanks to a herd of walkers passing through. Season 1 proved quite a hit, and despite the deviations, it proved a stellar adaptation for TV. With a solid cast, unique writing and boss direction, the finale last season set up nicely as the crew headed off to Fort Benning with hope lost in narrow paths.
