Jack The Ripper: Hell Blade Volume One Review

Je-Tae Yoo

Seven Seas Entertainment

Hell Blade is a supernatural-horror Korean comic(Manhwa) by Je-Tae Too. The series is about, you guess it, Jack the Ripper with a unique take. The first volume focuses on two detectives Roy and Harold working on the Ripper case. With very little to no progress on the case, the investigation is turned over to Ian Riley and Cain of The Church of England. To make matters worst, Roy and his lover Susan find themselves in big trouble.
The overall story is quite enjoyable and something that horror fans will love. Pacing is a bit slow, but the entire story is one big puzzle with each piece connecting to a much larger story. After reading the first volume it was quite satisfying and was looking forward to read the rest of this series. Yoo’s artwork is both eerie and grotesque, which is perfect for this series. The art has a shojo look and feel to it, which stands out from most horror comics. The action scenes are great and full of energy.
Hell Blade is something special and left me wanting more of this title. My interest level is extremely high and I'll be checking out the rest of the series for sure.  -Panagiotis Drakopoulos
