Eternal Coda; Interview with Bobby Hornsby, Guitarist & Vocals of Coda

L-R Tommy Hornsby(Bass), Bobby Hornsby(Guitar & Vocals) & Justin Bourn(Drums)

From Canton, Georgia, Coda has slowly building an audience locally with their heavy riffs and hard-hitting drums. The progressive metal/rock band released their first album Mechanism through Tate Music Group early this year. The band is currently working on new material for a new album. CBNAH staff writer Panagiotis Drakopoulos caught up with lead vocals and guitarist Bobby Hornsby to talk about the band, their music and a few thoughts on the music industry.

CBNAH: Can you tell us about growing up in Georgia?

Bobby Hornsby: Absolutely. Without sounding too silly(laughs), I live north of Georgia, about an hour away. As far as growing up, not backwoods but kind of in the woods, we always had property, we've always been able to kind of ride spoilers and dirt bikes. Never in the middle of the city but growing up in Georgia is good. The weather is never too bad, too hot and really too cold. It's just been good.

CBNAH: How did the band came together?

BH: Well, my brother, Tommy plays bass and he was in a band with our drummer, Justin. I was in a separate band maybe five or six years ago, and it ended up falling apart like a lot of these do when they're early on. I basically said, "I would like to play with you guys. I know you're starting up and going. Let's get together and see what happens?" We all share a common interest in music, which is always been the progressive kind of technical side of things. We've worked hard and stuck together ever since.

CBNAH: Who are your main influences in the music?

BH: Oh man, Dude (laughs). The obvious ones are going to be Dream Theater, Rush, Tool is pretty good. A lot of the newer acts like Animals as Leaders, Protest the Hero from up there where you guys in Canada, which is great. Any of those acts that are super technical and we also get into a lot of the other --  this is going to sound silly, but anything that sounds sonically good to us like Kesha and Pink. Some of their albums are so sonically just in your face and loud. It's unbelievable how they can make it some of that stuff sound so good. So, we're across the board, Pink Floyd and a lot of the old classic rock stuff. The only thing that we never really been into would be like Country.

CBNAH: Take us through your writing process - Do you guys write separately or together?

BH: Usually the way that works for us is bringing in a riff or a drum beat or an idea or what we call "vibe". Kind of what we're trying to portray with it and it usually stems from that little bit of a seed up until, whatever it is becoming, whether it ends up like a five minute deal or fifteen deal. It's mostly, I would say about ninety-five percent of the time it's always started with the music that way usually with the vibe or the riff. Lyrics, melodies and that kind of stuff will come after. Because I'm the vocalist I like to hear and have the whole slate done, and say we need to elongate something for a verse or a chorus or a bridge, we'll go back and make the song longer musically to fit that with the vocals.

CBNAH: Tell us about your first album?

BH: Our first album is called "Mechanism" and it's been out since February 4th and we released it through Tate Music Group. There's nine songs in total on the album and that is our first one.

CBNAH: What are the current plans for the band?

BH: Right now, we're working on new material. Regardless of what we're doing, we're always pitching in new ideas and throwing stuff out. We own our own studio, for us to able to go in and record or lay something down is not a very difficult process. We don't have to book time or anything like that. As far as being able to book shows and get on tour, absolutely! We're working on that pretty aggressively. We never stopped writing and still working on getting the marketing up and be able do some shows.

CBNAH: Have you guys went through any writer's block in the process of making music or has it entered your mind?

BH: It can. As far as writer's block not necessarily because we're always been able to spit out ideas, that's never the problem. Where we start getting into a little bit of a holdup is when we sometime disagree about the direction or the way something should be played or maybe the length of a scale. We'll go back and forth a little bit with that depending upon how we each feel.

CBNAH: Years ago, a lot of musicians would some sort of accomplishment if signed to any record label. Due to the current climate of the music industry, do you feel you can make your name through Youtube and other social media platforms?

BH: Yeah, you're dead on with that. I can only speak from experience from the record label that we work with, I could be wrong about this like I said. I think the way it's turning now, a lot of record companies are doing distribution and marketing deals versus the entire will record you, will do this and that. I don't think it's as big like back in the 80s and 90s, where you were signed and they gave you a huge advancement right upfront. I think just like what you said the reason that is because it's gotten so simple to be able to record and market yourself. You got Facebook, Twitter, ReverbNation is great, and YouTube is perfect. Now everything is digital. You can go get yourself set up with Pro Tools and you're done. What it would of taken an entire production team to be able to do that back in the 80s and 90s, now it's right there on your laptop. Now it's very easy for bands to able to locally grown themselves and do that on their own.

CBNAH: Do you think the music industry needs something like a Netflix model for music where you can pay a monthly fee to download or stream music?

BH: You know I never thought about that, dude. That's pretty cool and neat idea.

CBNAH: The idea could work with the Netflix model. Asking people to pay five to eight dollars a month to listen to music from all record labels and artists of different genres.

BH: I would say, I would be behind that for sure. Because from my experience it's increasingly difficult to, even though you can market yourself and you can put your name out there, when everyone can do it... It gets very saturated and therefore the money is not near as big as it was once at one point in time. So, I'm with you on that, it's a killer idea.

CBNAH: The idea is possible but it depends on how the record labels and artists would split up the percentage of the profit would be the issue.

BH: That's exactly right.

CBNAH: By the way, what's the metal scene like in Georgia?

BH: Well... (Laughs) Bare with me on this one. I'm not trying to sling dirt at all but the metal scene in Georgia is, in my experience nonexistent. You can get far as you, your buddies and some bands that you can network with. Go out and play at different places and get a name going but it seems like a lot of the bigger cities have that niche and that sect where you can get in there and really make a name. Atlanta is, I don't know maybe it's just hometown woes. It's difficult now, very open to country and hip-hop but it's tough in the metal world especially when your trying to play fifteen minute songs.

CBNAH: Do you or anyone in the band get nervous or have stage fright?

BH: Yeah it can but that will come and go. When you done it enough, when you get up there and move around enough it's not bad. Anytime it can get kind of nervous once you get a song or two in, after that I'm pretty well warmed up, loose and ready to go. I think both Tommy and Justin feel the same way.

CBNAH: What would be your perfect dream project?

BH: Wow. This is going to be weird but I'm not going to play anything on it. I'm going to produce it, mix it and master it. So, it would be Russell Allen (singer of Symphony X) on vocals, John Petrucci (Dream Theater guitarist) on guitar, Tony Levin (King Crimson) on bass and Matt Garstka (Animals as Leaders drummer) on drums. Somehow I would blend those dudes together and get them to write one massive forty-five minute song. That would be my dream project. That's my side of things, I love a song that can tell a story and to me, you need more than two minutes.

CBNAH: What are your main inspiration lyrically?

BH: It can be from anything. It literally can be -- Just a moment or a moment that you had just thinking with yourself. Just a thought or some of our stuff can be a little political or at least the state of the world the way we see it. So, anything, it can come out of thin air.

CBNAH: What can people expect from you guys in 2014 and beyond?

BH: Barring this tour thing that we're still in negotiations about, if that goes through we'll be out there and playing. As it looks like right now, it's going to be a east coast possible up all the way up till Maine. I can't get in much more detail then that. If falls through or doesn't happen, for sure we'll be recording. I would like if that happens, to be able to get the next album out by February of next year. Hopefully we can tour Europe in the future because it would be awesome. From what I read and talk to buddies who have done it, Europe it seems is much more open to the rock, the metal and the progressive side of things. I know a lot of the bands that we look up to, they do really well and in Japan and Australia than here. For instance Dream Theater, they tour Europe like it's their backyard.

CBNAH: Anything you would like to say to your family, friends and fans that have supported the band?

BH: Yes, absolutely, thank you. Thank you because this is not the easiest journey in the world. We appreciate it and we're glad that you guys are there.

About: Bridging the gap between metal and rock with help from dual guitar harmonies, pounding drum lines and wide-ranging vocal harmonies, Calgary’s Throne of Vengeance released their EP 'Live Evil' on October 19, 2013 that echoes the band’s signature thrash-tinged rock.

"'Live Evil' is “a collection of songs based on our experiences in the last two years, covering everything from a close friend’s imprisonment for a victim-less crime to the realization of humanity’s demise to the contrast between good and evil and life and death," says drummer Trevor Cobb.

“If there’s anything we would like people to take away from the record, it’s that you should be your own person, do what makes you happy, be aware of your world and be real. We have the power to control our own destiny. Together, we are more powerful than any world leader.”

Having shared the stage with numerous legends over the years, including Kill Devil Hill, 3 Inches Of Blood and Steven Pearcy of RATT, Throne of Vengeance is ready to take things to a whole new level with Live Evil. Are you ready for a major ‘bangover’?

'Here's Y' You Need To Listen To Double Experience! New Lyric Video and Interview With Guitarist Brock Tinsley

Check out their new music video 'Here's Y'

From the new album 721835

From Ottawa, Ontario, Double Experience has been making some huge waves in the Canadian music scene since 2011 with their Neo-Nerd Rock sound. The band line-up is Ian Nichols on vocals, guitarist Brock Tinsley, drummer Kenny Saunders and bassist Tim Kealey. Double Experience has toured all over Canada, United States, UK, Spain, Germany, and France. This August the band will be releasing their new album 721835 and recently kicked off their "Smells Like Freedom" tour a few days ago. CBNAH staff writer Panagiotis Drakopoulos caught up with guitarist Brock Tinsley to chat about touring, the new album, E3 and more.

(L-R: Ian Nichols (Vocals), Tim Kealey (Bass), Kenny Saunders (Drums), Brock Tinsley (Guitar))

CBNAH: For people who are unfamiliar with Double Experience, can you give us a brief history of the band?

Brock Tinsley: When our band members in this current line up came together in late 2011, we made a conscious decision to take our time and do as much we could without attracting too much attention to ourselves. This way, we knew we could foster something that was not only extremely special to us, but work out any of the inevitable kinks in a relatively private way. Since then, we've played 500 shows across 7 countries.

CBNAH: Who were some of your main influences (both music and lyrics-wise)?

BT: I respect anybody who can become a totally different character for several minutes and weave a concise story in their songs. That is the coolest thing to me, and bands like Coheed and Cambria, He is Legend and Clutch are my favourites for this reason.

CBNAH: Take us through your songwriting process?

BT: Both Ian and I collaborate on lyrics, and I really cherish that give-and-take we have. Ian has a gift of creating melodies and harmonies and he will often let me work in ideas, words and prose that I feel enhance the theme or topic we choose for each song.

CBNAH: 721835 will be out this August, musically how has the band progress from One Big Quicksand to this album?

BT: Writing One Big Quicksand was basically a lot of second guessing and revision, but ever since then we have all become more comfortable with our instruments and vision for the band. When we wrote each of the new songs for 721835 it was because we were chasing an idea we all absolutely loved. For better or worse, none of the songs on the new album were sitting in a “maybe” pile being dissected or changed, but the end result is something we are so much more proud of.

CBNAH: As someone who is detached from the mainstream music, what do you make of the state the industry is in?

BT: Music has never been easier to create or release from the musician's perspective. This reality has it's pros and cons, but anybody bitching about the current state of the industry needs to realize that it is not the audience's fault or their “short attention spans”. People would be gladly laid off their jobs if it meant they could cram another season of Breaking Bad in before the sun goes down. People have all the time in the world, they just don't want to waste it on bad music anymore.

CBNAH: Tells us about your upcoming Smells Like Freedom Tour and what can new and old fans expect from you?

BT: The Smells Like Freedom Tour won't be our first time in the USA, but it will be our first time in many of the states we are visiting. Whether somebody knew about us years ago or they just heard “Here's Y” and come to the show heckling us to play that one song over and over, it doesn't matter. Anybody who is there for us on this tour can expect us to repay their good taste in music in full frontal nerdity with the craziest and certified Most Canadian show they will see all summer.

CBNAH: Overall thoughts of E3 this year? Any specific games you're looking forward to?

BT: The Division is going to change my life. I haven't been this excited to get a game since Diablo 2, and that was the 4th grade. Ian and I still haven't decided on which next-gen console to get because we've been on the road so much, and games like Sunset Overdrive and No Man's Sky are not making our decision any easier.

CBNAH: What shows, games, novels, films and/or comics are you guys currently getting into?

BT: Tim and I have spent the past week going through his list of must-see movies, and bonding over the horror titles with him has been nice. These included Ichi the Killer, The Strangers and Maniac. I know Ian just bought The Hobbit to reread on the road, and he’s always working on his comic collection when he can.

CBNAH: What does the future holds for the band?

BT: Some more tour dates to round out the summer, and then I’m pushing for some time to conceptualize our next move and demo new material. Our band has been running on all burners that I’m sure two more summer tours for us is going to drive us back to a relaxing period to recharge our batteries, physically and creatively.

CBNAH: Finish this sentence – Comic book nerds are hot because…

BT: They know the value of wrapping the goods in plastic.

Bloody-Disgusting Exclusive Album Stream PSYCHOTIC GARDENING 'Hymnosis'; New Music Video 'Origin Of The Infection'

Via Press Release:

Winnipeg, MB death metal band Psychotic Gardening is creeping closer to the release date of their new album 'Hymnosis' out on Tuesday, May 13th. Teaming up with Bloody-Disgusting.com, the band is exclusively streaming the album at the following link.

Album Stream - Psychotic Gardening - 'Hymnosis' - http://bloody-disgusting.com/exclusives/3292975/psychotic-gardening-hymnosis-exclusive-album-premiere/

Guitarist Andrew Wiens comments on the album:

“What we do is instinctual. We write for ourselves, to appease our own desire for music and art, it’s what motivates us. We rely on our own instincts and trust that what works for us will work for our fans. We believe in dynamics, that the juxtaposition of our faster songs with our slower songs lends power to our music. I’d like to think that HYMNOSIS takes you on a musical journey, through peaks and valleys - metaphorical musical textures - so that at the end of the day, you’re affected by this as a collective work.”

The band returns in 2014 with new material and the return of Chuck Labossiere after he filled in with Broken Hope for tour dates in Europe and Canada. The album is the follow up to 2011's 'Humanitorium' and 2007's debut ‘Hürdür’ and features nine heavy hitting assaults sure to bang skulls with its full-throttle, go-for-the-throat execution of doom and black metal. In this release the band digs into its death metal roots for a concoction of their most vicious material while still hammering down on doom-laden monster riffs.

Psychotic Gardening will also be holding an album launch in their hometown of Winnipeg, MB on May 9th at The Zoo with local support from Endless Chaos and Entity. Show Details:

Interview with Eddy Jasmin

From Montreal, Quebec, Eddy Jasmin is one of the key figures in the eastern Canada electronic music scene. In 1995, ten years after his humble beginnings in Montréal suburbs, a young Haitian-Canadian was hired to take over the decks of the legendary Bain Douche Night Club on Saint-Laurent Boulevard. Ten years later, the adopted Montrealer would then be considered one of the top DJs of his generation. Nicknamed « Montréal’s Prince of House », in the title of a 2004 interview, a term which has since stuck, Eddy is no stranger to the techno and electro vibes either borrowing the best of both styles as his “fine-tuned” animal instincts guide his selections delivered with taste and poise. those who have followed this multi-talented artist know of his great diversity. CBNAH caught up with Eddy Jasmin to discuss music, life in Haiti and more.

CBNAH: What are your earliest memories of living in Haiti? Do you still visit there?

Eddy Jasmin: I remember as far as the day I left Haiti. The whole first plane experience kinda traumatized me I guess hehe. Went back once back in 97 to get a clear view of where I come from but thats about it.

CBNAH: Which artists were your inspiration when you were growing up and what made you want to be a DJ?

EJ: No one really but I gotta say I was blessed with an uncle and step father who were into the music playing at parties and stuff so that kinda helped and without a doubt my passionate love for music as a kid. Then once I got going into it I discovered Roger Sanchez who up to this day I have admiration for.

CBNAH: What's a day like for you in the recording studio?

EJ: I have never spent more than five hours in a studio, I kinda like the three hours sessions because its laidback and good creativity.

CBNAH: What can you describe your live act to people who haven't seen you live?

EJ: “Fine-tuned” animal instinct selection delivered with taste and poise which exhilarates all the senses is always in full force.

CBNAH: Are there any plans for you to record a EP or full-length LP album?

EJ: Always a possibility but I have the equivalent already recorded which is in commercial fine tuning process.

CBNAH: You and Julien Turmel formed the side project Jasmin and Jul. How did you guys meet up and what does Julien bring to the recording studio?

EJ: We met at the legendary Sona after hours back in '03. Julien is an expert in music production he brings the technical aspect of it all without him none of my music would be possible. I mostly concentrate on the sound and creation of the music.

CBNAH: Switching from music for a second, you were in the film Pluto Nash. Is this correct, if so, did you get to chance to chat with Eddie Murphy?

EJ: Yes, I did but so very briefly and mostly on a pro level, he is a BIG superstar on the set. Since he had to come talk to me in the movie we got a few blooper laughs between takes.

CBNAH: What's the best advice you got about being a DJ?

EJ: Stay Sober ! haha!

CBNAH: What are your main goals for 2014?

EJ: Well seeing as the clubscene is dying I wanna go all out in Supper Clubs, lounges and Corporate stuff.. Increase money income so I can free up some day job time in order to put it back in the studio... For starters haha.

CBNAH Interview with Rob "Rawrb" Kersey of Psychostick

What happens if you mix over the top humor with heavy metal? You get the band Psychostick. In the last ten years, the Arizona band has released three full length albums, three EPs, and either shared the stage or toured with a lot of known names in metal. The band has a strong online presence with their popular Youtube channel with over ten million views. Recently, they launched a successful campaign on Indiegogo. Which the band will be making a new album and building their own recording studio. CBNAH staff writer Peter Drakopoulos caught up with lead singer Rob "Rawrb" Kersey to chat about the band, Indiegogo project, the Alfredo Afro web comic and more.

Peter Drakopoulos: First off, how’s the band been touring for the past few weeks?

Rob "Rawrb" Kersey: No, actually. We’ve been off the road for the past couple of moths because we’re focusing on the Indiegogo project and writing and recording. We still do a couple of dates here and there but not on tour.

PD: When I first heard the band’s music it has a lot of humour. Does this humour comes from what you guys experienced in your daily lives?

RK: Yes, it’s pretty much a lot of it is based on real life experiences. For example, Two Ton Paperweight is about Josh’s [Guitarist] crappy car.

PD: You guys have a successful Indiegogo campaign with the new album and studio. Why Indiegogo instead of Kickstarter?

RK: Indiegogo is a lot more flexible. In Kickstarter, if you don’t reach your goal for funding, you don’t get anything. Indiegogo avoids that all or nothing model, so, we wanted to have at least a little bit money in case, you know, if we didn’t make our goal. We kind of took the safe route.

PD: You have a web comic called Alfredo Afro. Can you tell us a bit about the comic?

RK: Sure. The web comic that I draw is basically just me having another creative outlet.  It’s really just about random stuff that happened to me or other people on tour.

PD: Do you see this web comic published in print by a publisher?

RK: Honestly, I  don’t know. It could happen eventually, I guess. The problem is a lot of the material is pretty vulgar. I don’t know who would wanted to publish those unless it’s one of those alternative publishers. But it really all depends on the situation.

PD: You have a popular Webcast on your Youtube channel. Can you tell is the origins of the Webcast?

RK: Webcasting is something we’ve been doing for the last five, six years. It started through a website like Stickam. But once Youtube introduce the ability to do livestream, so, we do it from them now. The whole idea behind it’s just to hangout with our fans and interact with them. We used to do this thing called Druken Webcast. Where people would be able buys us some shots through the website and we would say their name and then take a shot online and get pretty messed up. [Laughs.]

PD: The band has been around since 2000. Have you ever thought you would be this successful?

RK: I knew that at some point, early on in our career, when we first formed. With the recording of our very first album, and I remember listening to it and I just had a feeling that if the right person heard this at the right time, I think we go somewhere. But wonder it would be so cool if it happens. But… The record didn’t get played at first, and then it got played on XM Radio and then it blew us up like crazy. Sometimes I have to sit back and go wow we’re actually doing-- I haven’t had a real day job in like six, seven years now. And being in this band I’m really grateful for it. The fact we’re still here and people are still supporting us. We’re pretty gratefully for that and I had no idea that it would go this far.

PD: What can fans expect from the band in 2014?

RK: Well, completing the studio and obviously the new album. We’re going to get that done. There will be a lot of touring, we’re trying to go to Europe. Working on that but it’s always been a struggle for us. I think we’ll be able to do it for next year. I’ve said that a few times already for the past few years. We’ll see. Next year will be the new album, lots of touring, more videos and more content.

CBNAH Interview with Where Giants Once Stood

Where Giants Once Stood has been making some huge waves in the Canadian metal scene. From word of mouth and a solid live show, the band has been winning a lot of new fans in process. In July, the band released The Changing EP and the music video for the single The Heavens Tremble. Currently are in the middle of their Where’s Your Head At Tour, which the band is touring all around Ontario and Quebec. CBNAH staff writer Peter Drakopoulos caught up with lead vocals Reshaun Page, and lead guitarist and vocals, Jordan Turnbull, to chat about touring, the EP and more.

Peter Drakopoulos: This is the start of your Ontario and Quebec tour. How are things so far?

Reshaun Page: We only played two shows so far. In Oshawa, our hometown and Belleville. Driven pretty good and I’m excited for Montreal tonight.

Jordan Turnbull: Our Oshawa show was really good. It was a bit of emptiness off the top, we were a little worried and it just filled up. It was nice and yeah, we’re actually really stoked to be in Montreal. Our last tour we weren’t able to come through here. So, it’s really cool that we’re actually going to be playing in the metal capital of Canada.

PD: Well, I thought Toronto was the metal capital of Canada. If you look at all of the bands that came out of that province like Kittie.

Both: True.

JT: I’ve always just heard that there’s an awesome metal scene in Montreal. I only pass through here.

PD: There is a great metal scene here in Montreal. The best way I can describe your music is a cross between Death and Alice in Chains. Were you guys greatly influenced by both bands?

JT: Honestly, not really. Reshaun really likes Death a lot, but he’s not even a guitar player. [Laughs.] I listened to a bit of Death and Alice in Chains. But my main influences are a lot of the new wave of American Heavy Metal like Lamb [of God], Avenged [Sevenfold], Killswitch [Engage] and also I like Blues a lot. It’s Interesting with a couple of  names you drop but for me personally, no.

RP: You know, Chuck [Schuldiner] had that high scream. I did listen to him a lot before I really focus on my technique. I really never thought about it.

PD: What’s the metal scene like in Toronto and how you guys are able to stand out?

JT: The whole GTA [Greater Toronto Area] seems to be pretty good and always has been a big music scene for all types of music. We’ve been treated very well overall in Toronto. Our fist show was with Chelsea Grin and Veil of Maya, that was awesome. We played a few shows here and there -- Sneaky Dee’s and stuff. There’s always crowds and always mosh pits so, yes, it’s been pretty good. I enjoy it.

RP: We’ve been told that our style of music will appeal more here in Montreal, which is interesting. The metal scene in Montreal is very traditional. We kinda of have that traditional metal influence too in our music. Other bands have their own sound in Toronto and it’s really good I love their sound, but we’re also trying to do something a little bit different too. People would say , “You guys gotta go to Montreal. They will love you there.”

PD: You guys released the Changing EP this year. I was wondering will you be releasing a full length album next or planning on releasing an EP every year to have your music out there constantly?

JT: The next idea is gonna be EP again. Our personal opinion as a band is that we don’t feel it’s necessary just yet for us to release a full length album. First of all it’s a lot of money and we don’t have a lot of money. If we can put out four songs we can tour and do the same kind of stuff as would of eleven songs. We’re going to stick with the EPs for the next little awhile. If things pick up or we get bigger or we ever get an agent or label then definitely of course we’ll talk about full lengths.

PD: Can we expect the new EP in 2014?

Both: Yes.

JT: I don’t think we should announce releases just yet, but it will be in 2014.

RP: We’re writing and we have scheduled for the next recording sessions. And we’re actually working with Jon Howard from Threat Signal. He’s going to be producing our recording. We’re all excited about it and it’s going to be fun. So, yes, definitely in 2014.

JT: We’re also all pretty big fans of Threat Signal. We think that Jon [Howard] is amazing vocalist. We’re really stoked for Reshaun because Jon is probably going to be able to help him [Reshaun] to get to the next level as a vocalist. We’re pretty excited for this next record for sure.

PD: After this tour of Ontario and Quebec are there plans to tour the rest of Canada?

RP: Hoping to go out West in the spring or in the summer. The offer was there to do it but touring the Prairies during the Winter time is a big risk. We’re definitely going out West in 2014 that’s our goal.

PD: What can people expect from you guys in 2014 and beyond?

JT: It’ll be probably pretty similar to what we did this past year. We’ll have new music videos, probably do another drum and guitar playthrough on our Youtube channel. Along with another lyric video and we’re just going to tour as hard as we can and if we’re lucky and if they have us, hopefully we can crossover to the States. As you mention, The West Coast would be awesome. We just want to stay out as long as we can. We all have jobs and stuff but that’s second -- besides the point we just want to be out on the road and try to get the band out there.

PD: For the recording process what happens first? Do you guys jam and work on the music while Reshaun is writing lyrics or you work on the lyrics first and then music or combination of both?

JT: Well, Reshaun is always writing lyrics. Myself and Scott [Major, Rhythm Guitarist] write the music and both him and I can record. We have a little recording program and basically we just demo. We write and work on it until it becomes a song.  Then we bring the song to the band, Austin [Hamilton, Drummer] and Remy [Lebeau, Bassist] adds the drums and bass, and everything comes together from there. Reshaun is generally the final step. He comes in at the end and puts his lyrics on top of the song.

RP: Yeah, I keep writing lyrics all the time and I bring my ideas to Jordan and Scott and they work with me on the phrasing and producing. It’s a collaborative idea with like how the vocals go on top of songs and Jordan usually sings most of the choruses. So, he writes his parts, for the most parts If I have an idea I write what I’m thinking and then Jordan will write his part for the chorus and his melody.

JT: Usually, Reshaun will come up with a theme of the song, the music will be written but there won’t be a theme to what it’s about. So, he’ll give us a theme and he leaves the choruses and bridges blank. For Scott and I, whoever happens to sing that part can write our lyrics based off Reshaun’s theme. That’s how it works.

PD: Last question, where do you guys see yourselves one year from now?

JT: Hopefully if we’re lucky, touring Europe. We want to try and get out there whether label or not. If we can it’ll be awesome and the same for America. Hopefully we can tour outside of Canada by year end, I think that’s probably everyone’s goal.

RP: We want to go to where the metal markets are a lot bigger.  We’ve been playing around here for a long time, even when we were younger. The metal market in Canada, I would say is not as big compared to Europe and the States. Hopefully will be touring there and the band can take the next step. This is our second tour of this year since we launched as a band. We just got to keep on pushing, keep on going and hopefully it’ll payoff.

The Console Slayer..!

Welcome to The Console Slayer!

This is a new feature about a subject a lot of us are passionate about: video games!

Today’s subject will be about old school versus modern games.

A lot of us video game nerds are familiar with modern games. Some of us might not have experience with “retro” games though. In a lot of cases this is due to age. Lets define “retro” though because it could be relative. By retro I mean anything from ancient systems like Magnavox Odyssey, Colecovision, Atari systems and NES through say the fifth generation consoles like the PS1 or N64.

For those of us that are familiar with retro games as well as modern games, let me pose this question: Are retro games more difficult than modern games? I'm of the opinion that they are.

Modern games are rife with multiple difficulty settings (standard these days), adaptive/on-the-fly difficulty scaling, automatic checkpoints and the ability to save your game. On the other hand, what about games like the Ninja Gaiden series (modern), MGS, Demon Souls/Dark Souls and Super Meat Boy though? These are some of the most widely acknowledged, most difficult of modern games.

What about old school games with the limited programming and hardware capabilities, lack of saving whenever one wants, unreliable physical mediums and more widespread glitches? Some examples of the most difficult retro games for reference: Ghosts 'N Goblins, Battletoads, (Mike Tyson's) Punch Out, Gradius series, TMNT, Contra (series) and Ninja Gaiden (original series).

What do you guys and gals think? (Discuss here or in the CBNAH Console Slayer Facebook Group Discussion) It doesn't really matter which is more difficult but its an interesting discussion both of gaming history and of gamers themselves.

I've also decided to always leave you with a little tidbit of my favorite game music/chiptunes with every post.
Labeled the 'Final Boss' it is actually the Shiar stage theme from X-Men on Sega Genesis:
