Dave Johnson is the master of the modern comic book cover. Johnson has a deep understanding of the principles of cover design, which he shows of with every new cover he does. He won the Eisner Award for best cover artist in 2002 for his work on 100 Bullets, and has continued to striking covers. Check out a showcase of his work after the jump!
This cover is one of my all time favourites. The colour scheme is perfect, and each image in the collage is purposefully placed.
Often it is the most simple designs that are the most striking.
The cover for the final issue of 100 Bullets just scream finality. The curtain, the open briefcase and fallen contents - brilliant.
One thing Johnson does as well as, if not better than anyone else is collage. He combines elements of the story so well, it works both dramatically and aesthetically.
I love Johnson's use of skulls in his Punisher Max covers. It's a great little design element that gives the cover an extra layer of meaning.
